Our research is focused on discovering the patterns that determine microbial diversity and productivity in the natural environment. We conduct our studies in extreme environments because these systems enable us to address fundamental questions about evolution and ecology. Currently, we are working on two projects, one in the thermal springs of Yellowstone National Park, and the other in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Lydia Zeglin defended her Ph.D. Matt Kirk defended his Ph.D. and is a Erin Crossey was accepted into the MD/Ph.D. program at UNM Med School Stephanie Moquin was awarded a Goldwater Scholarship and the ASM summer Fellowship Justine Hall graduated summa cum laude (Dec 2007)! and will begin a Ph.D. at Emory Fall 2009. What will we do without her?
